The Latino Farmers Cooperative of Louisiana is a non-profit network of emerging farmers, enthusiastic gardeners and conscientious consumers brought together by a mutual love for fresh food, local economic growth and sustainable farming.
It has become clear in New Orleans and across the country that access to healthy, fresh foods as well as food security are serious issues. Over the last half-century more and more food has been grown on fewer and bigger factory-style farms. Pesticides, soil and water pollution and poor labor conditions are the engines of this growth-led model of agriculture. Finally, large factories take this fresh food and process it into fatty, unhealthy forms devoid of their original nutrient content.
Unfortunately, many urban areas no longer have access to fresh food, leaving them unhealthy and vulnerable.
The Latino Farmers Cooperative believes in a different model.
- Grow Local
- Sell local
- Create economic growth that is sustainable and just environmentally and socially
By turning urban blight into urban farms we beautify the city while creating a new space for people to learn about and participate in sustainable agriculture by creating their own agro-enterprise. Our members are trained in farming, market strategy, healthy diet and environmental sustainability.
Every week the Cooperative brings fresh, healthy produce, cheese, and free-range eggs to market, and in doing so, raises the standard of living of the Latino Community in Louisiana.
